Bio

Alex Muzhen Lyu is a Chinese artist based in New York. Working across sculpture, installation, and durational processes, Lyu investigates how hierarchy, authority, and systems of value shape the conditions through which individuals understand their place in the world.

Her practice translates social pressure into material and spatial forms, often through repetition, accumulation, restraint, and bodily implication. In her recent thesis series, In One’s Place, a sculptural tethering post and a durational stamping installation examine how assigned positions are constructed, maintained, and internalized over time. Using reclaimed wood, wax, ink, and architectural surfaces, Lyu’s work considers the boundary between personal agency and collective formation.

Lyu holds an MFA in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York and a BA in Visual Studies with a minor in Art History from the University of Toronto. Her work has been shown in New York and Toronto.
